Other African Animals (Day 37)
Our first safari with the kids: a frog safari in Rwanda! Hazel and Hugh were too young to see gorillas, and they were a bit scared…. We explored the hotel’s back yard in search of frogs that we had heard the night before.
Zebras were everywhere in Kenya. A group of zebras is called a dazzle of zebras, and you can sort of see why.
One fun kid question— Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Experts say they are black with white stripes. Their skin is black underneath. Zebras have black and white hair all over their bodies, and the white hair is the same except that it lacks pigment.
Giraffes
Chameleon.
Agama lizard
Warthog
Jackal. Hugh said he wants to be a jackal (or maybe a vulture).
Thompson’s gazelle- When it senses a predator, it jumps to show that it is healthy and hard to catch. “Maybe you should try to catch that slowpoke over there!”
Grant’s gazelle- A lot of antelopes have a funny marking on their backside that seems to serve as a “follow me” signal to family members. The grant’s gazelle’s bum looks a bit like an owl’s face.
Impala - males fighting
Baboon
Baboon babies
Black crowned crane
Kori bustard- the largest flying bird in Africa
Saddle-billed stork
Lilac-breasted roller
With all the amazing animals in the Maasai Mara, somehow our kids decided that the most exciting thing was — this turtle!
